Disabling Windows® Media® Center™
Are you unsure about how to remove Windows® Media® Center™ from your computer?
Windows media center is an application developed to transform your PC into home entertainment equipment, controlled with the help of a specially designed remote with a prominent green Button. Windows media center (MCE) is an inbuilt feature present in Windows Vista Home Premium as well as Vista Ultimate editions, but it is evident that not all the users of Vista Home premium or Ultimate would require or use Media center for entertainment purpose as different users have different tasks to perform and hence priorities may vary. However, users are denied the provision of uninstalling Media center using control panel.
It is impossible to uninstall from Programs and features or by turning off the Windows features as there is no entry for Windows Media center disable. Though Windows Media center being an integral part of the operating system cannot be permanently removed or uninstalled from the system but turning off or disabling the WMC services would deny it from running or start even if WMC button is initiated or when users click under the start menu, truly as if Windows Media Center is not present or installed in the system. As a matter of fact there are many ways to prevent or make Windows Media Center disable in Vista. Let us see the different ways to disable Windows Media center:
- How to disable Windows Media Center through services?
- How to disable Windows Media Center through startup services?
- How to disable Windows Media Center through Registry?
How to disable Windows Media Center through services?
Type services.msc in the start search box to open up the services window. Identify all services related to Media center like Windows Media Center Scheduler Service, Windows Media Center Service Launcher, Windows Media Center Extender Service, and Windows Media Center Receiver Service as well as all the services starting with “eh” and change their start type to be disabled.
How to disable Windows Media Center through startup services?
Type MSConfig in the start search box to open system configuration and click on the startup tab from the top. Let all the entries which have command path as ehome be unchecked like ehTray.exe. This will stop MCE related services to be started up. To be on the safer side it would be recommended to disable WMC services as mentioned above.
Switch over to Non-Premium editions of Windows Vista
A costly workaround solution can be switching over to the non premium editions of windows vista such as Home Basic or Business versions which do not have Media Center integrated as a bundled package.
Run Group policy editor with command as GPEdit.msc and expand Computer configuration if you want to disable for all users or expand User Configuration in case you need to disable for user logged in only. Then expand Administrative Templates and then Windows Components and select Windows Media Center. Let the settings for “DO not allow Windows Media Center to run” to be disabled.
